I’ve wanted to work in design for as long as I can remember. I was a creative child, always cutting and sticking and at the age of 8, I wanted to become a fashion designer, with the dream of owning my own company one day. It didn’t quite work out like that in the end but eventually I became a graphic designer after being awarded a First Class Honours Degree in Two-Dimensional Design from university.
I started out in publishing, working through the night on press day. Then I changed direction to work for a corporate company where I became mainly involved in designing for the web.
Today, I am currently contracted part-time for NAGC, a local children’s charity, which enables me to ferry my children to and from school. As their sole designer, I am responsible for all areas of design from their publications to the website.
In addition, I am finally taking the plunge to work for myself as any working mum can say that finding work to fit around the kids is very difficult. So it makes sense! I take on freelance contracts and work from home, which keeps my overheads low and reflects my value for money prices.
Designing for small businesses
I enjoy designing for a variety of clients, especially women who are starting up their own business (sorry guys!). It gives me a great sense of achievement knowing that I have helped them create an image that communicates the right message for their company. I love to design simple yet effective design solutions that could really help a business grow. I think it is important now more than ever, especially in this difficult economic climate to help each other as small businesses so we can get ourselves on our feet. Times are hard right now and I would take great pleasure in designing for any business, whether they need a basic logo right the way through to their website.
